Types of Condition Surveys
on Craft of Wood, GRP, Steel, Composite or Ferrocement Construction
TYPE 1 PRELIMINARY INSPECTION
This may save time, expense and disappointment when there may be doubt as to satisfactory basic condition. A brief inspection is carried out on the vessel as lying with no preparatory work or dismantling. The observation of such an inspection should ascertain whether a full survey is justified. It should also provide an assessment of the general state of the vessel but will not report detailed findings. It is not a substitute for the condition survey. Usually adequate for Valuation.
TYPE 2 PRE-PURCHASE CONDITION
This is a normal survey routine often carried out prior to purchase of a craft in respect of the condition of the hull and gear excluding machinery and electrical gear. The general scope of the examination is set out overleaf. This type entails an examination of generally accessible areas of the vessel’s structure and gear, but will often refer briefly to the general state of any main machinery or similar equipment and to any obvious defects thereof that are within his knowledge to ascertain by superficial examination, but the internal mechanical condition is not assessed. Electrics are normally tested for operation of equipment only by normal switching, but no dismantling of electrical equipment is carried out and circuit wiring is not load tested.
This survey meets the normal requirements of a Y.D.S.A. ‘Condition Survey’. More details...
TYPE 3 EXTENDED HULL AND GEAR
This survey routine is similar to Type 2 but is more extensive, usually carried out on older craft and includes essential dismantling by boatyard personnel. Examination of machinery, electrics, systems, similar to Type 2, see overleaf. More details...
TYPE 4 HULL AND DECK STRUCTURE ONLY
This possible alternative inspection does not include such matters as deck equipment, rig, interior fittings or installed systems or equipment. As such, we cannot recommend such a reduction in the scope of information provided, but do realise that there can be occasions when the comprehensive information provided by the full Hull and Gear Type 2 survey is considered unnecessary. If the client is clear as to the requirement, this type of survey could be adequate for certain purposes. More details...
TYPE 5 EXTERNAL HULL ONLY
Vessels to be hauled out on slipway, lifted ashore or dried out in dock or on hard standing.Underwater and topside surfaces, hull fittings and appendages inspected. This survey does not include bulkheads, engine bearers or other items incorporated in the internal hull structure.
OTHER TYPES
Inspection of installed equipment e.g. machinery, electronics, electrical, rigs, etc., can always be arranged and detailed photographic reports produced.
USE OF NON-DESTRUCTIVE TESTING EQUIPMENT
We will normally make use of equipment such as: moisture meter, electrical resistance meter, Ph papers, magnifiers, tachometer, as arising and considered necessary during the course of survey.
